STATISTICAL ASSOCIATE

The Department of Population Health Research with Alberta Health Services – Cancer Care has a position open for a full-time Statistical Associate in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Information about Calgary and the nearby spectacular Canadian Rocky Mountains can be found at www.visitor.calgary.ab.ca.
Our team of Research Scientists is engaged in cutting-edge population-based cancer research including etiology, molecular epidemiology, cancer screening, health services and biostatistics. Current studies focus on: the role of physical activity in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and survival; endogenous and exogenous hormones in the etiology of reproductive cancers; knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the public and health professionals regarding cancer screening procedures; the study of and adjustment for diet and physical activity related measurement error and statistical methods for studies involving genetic data. With the addition of Dr. Martha Slattery as our Chair in Molecular Epidemiology, we are moving more into biostatistics, statistical genetics and manipulation of large data sets.
The Statistical Associate is part of an established research support team that includes other MSc trained statisticians, MSc. trained epidemiologists, database and data collection programmers.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
As part of this dynamic team, the Statistical Associate will have specific individual responsibilities actively supporting the Research Scientists in the Department of Population Health Research (Division of Preventive Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary) by providing statistical support for research projects. The successful candidate will work on a variety of epidemiology research studies and will typically work on more than one concurrent task. Independent judgment, attention to detail and problem-solving skills will be essential in performing the job duties that include:

Performing basic and advanced statistical analyses using
SAS; knowledge of Stata and/or R an asset;
•
Programming and/or implementing new statistical methods;
•
Preparing written summaries of data analyses including
figures, tables, as needed for scientific papers.
As part of ongoing professional development, the Statistical Associate will also have access to a support and educational network including working collaboratively with researchers and other statisticians, access to SAS and Stata User Groups and monthly meetings with other research-based staff to discuss statistical and research ideas and future developments. They will also have the opportunity for further education and training in biostatistics and epidemiology.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in Biostatistics or Statistics, with significant applied statistical experience. Experience performing statistical analyses using SAS, and the ability to converse and write English at an advanced level is essential. Knowledge and use of statistical software associated with genetic analysis, familiarity with statistical genetics and manipulation of large genetic databases is desired.
