The Alberta Health Services, Cancer Care, is responsible for cancer treatment and research for the province. The Department of Population Health Research, within Cancer Care has a position open for a full-time Epidemiologist based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Our team of Research Scientists is engaged in cutting-edge population-based cancer research including etiology, molecular epidemiology, cancer screening, health services and biostatistics. Current studies focus on the role of physical activity in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and survival; endogenous and exogenous hormones in the etiology of reproductive cancers; knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the public and health professionals regarding cancer screening procedures; nutritional, and molecular epidemiology and statistical methods for studies involving genetic data.
The Epidemiologist is part of an established research support team which currently includes several MSc trained epidemiologists and statisticians, as well as database and data collection programmers, research assistants and grant administrators.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
As part of a dynamic team, the Epidemiologist will have specific individual responsibilities actively supporting the research scientists in the Department (affiliated to the University of Calgary through the Division of Preventive Oncology) by providing support to research activities related to obtaining funding for, and the conduct of, epidemiologic research for research projects. The successful candidate will work on a variety of research studies and will typically work on more than one concurrent task. Independent judgment and expertise will be essential in performing the job duties that include:
• Assist in the preparation of written summaries, tables
etc for project reports, posters and scientific papers
for publication.
• Routinely perform literature reviews as required.
• Design research studies, methodology, data collection protocols
and standards, in consultation with the Researcher
• Write and successfully publish research papers and publications.
• Present detailed research results in meetings, seminars,
scientific conferences and or related settings both within
and outside of the organization.
• Preparation of research grant applications and contract
proposals.
• Collaborate with investigators on their research grants,
including reviewing papers and protocols.
• Supervise students, research assistants or research associates,
and distributing work
• Oversee the operations and quality of work in the area
• Conduct other related administrative duties at a managerial
level.
As part of ongoing development, the Epidemiologist will also have access to a support and educational network including working collaboratively with researchers and other research associates and monthly meetings with other research-based staff to discuss research ideas and future developments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Epidemiology, Community or Public Health, along with five or more or more years’ experience in a research setting. As this position will be a unit lead, previous supervisor or management experience would be an asset.
