Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in
Genetic/Molecular Epidemiology and
Gene-Environment Interactions
UofC Faculty of Medicine/AHS-Cancer Care
This position is ideal for a recent graduated PhD who wishes do a Post Doctoral research focusing on studies surrounding molecular epidemiology and cancer risk under the supervision of Dr. Marty Slattery. Recent studies have included the collection of biologic samples and the analysis of molecular mechanisms involved in cancer etiology and survival. Numerous opportunities exist for the successful candidate to contribute to on-going and planned research studies. This opportunity draws together several areas of expertise – epidemiology, genetics, population science, quantitative methods, and bench science – to contribute to understanding the combined effects of genetic and environmental factors on cancer.
A dynamic, stimulating and growing environment, Department of Oncology currently has a team of nationally and internationally recognized research scientists together with a core group of experienced research staff, engaged in cutting-edge population-based cancer research including etiology, molecular epidemiology, cancer screening and biostatistics. The research program and training provides a unique opportunity for individuals with graduate-level training and a strong quantitative and laboratory background to participate in multidisciplinary genetic and molecular epidemiologic research conducted by Scientists at the AHS – Cancer Care and University of Calgary in collaboration with national and international Scientists as well as to foster independent interests of the Research Fellow. Through research, training workshops, educational departmental activities (journal club, seminars) and mentorship, the program is intended to enhance the analytical skills of future academics and professional leaders in the field of molecular epidemiology.
Time will be devoted to original analyses and manuscripts evaluating how genetic variation affects breast and colorectal cancer risk using single SNP and haplotype associations and a pathway-based approach, and how genetic risk factors are modified by environmental factors (e.g., diet). Additional analyses will focus on the survival and specific tumor markers. Emphasis will be placed on leading original analyses and manuscripts; career development; and transition toward independent funding and an independent research career. The successful candidate will be supported in their applications for external fellowship awards. The position will provide a minimum stip end of $45,000, as well as benefits and a professional development allowance of $1200 and a travel allowance of $2450. Additional top up funds are available for those successful in obtaining a career award.
